Sympathy and Peanut Butter

Katie and I started watching a DVD tonight (Nim’s Island - pretty cute) after a very light dinner.  I was impressed.  She almost made it through half of the movie before she began clutching her stomach and moaning due to the nausea.

As you read in her post from Tuesday evening, Katie is experiencing morning sickness for most of the day and into the evening.  Some days are better than others.  When the better times arrive, she thankfully takes advantage and eats a good sized meal.  More often, she is struggling to get down even a small meal.  She has begun taking several small snack breaks throughout the day.  That seems to help a little.  Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are one of the things she can usually tolerate and have thus become a staple on our table.  Here’s an odd one:  having been told that ginger is a good way to settle the tummy, Katie has decided more than once in the last few weeks that she wanted Sushi rolls (yes, they were cooked) topped with Ginger for dinner.  How many people do you know who say, “My stomach hurts.  I feel nauseated.  Can we get Sushi?

Kelly G (co-worker) wrote me a touching email a couple of weeks ago, advising us to cherish every moment of this pregnancy.  I do my best to enjoy those moments and share in as much of the experience as I can.  Keeping in mind most of the nausea “experience” Katie is “enjoying”, I have been tempted to reprogram the timer at the top of this page to be a countdown to the end of the first trimester instead of the due date.  I would label it Time until the morning when I hopefully won’t wake up to hear my wife trying to puke up a lung while I lay there like a useless slug because there is nothing I can do to make her feel better…

At last Saturday’s Astros’ game, Dad and I sat in front of a couple with a young daughter.  When the subject of Katie’s pregnancy came up (because I excitedly tell EVERYONE I meet), the lady told me that she was sick as a dog for the first 5 months of her pregnancy.  Oh dear…

Josh (friend from San Antonio and former co-worker) and his wife are expecting their first baby in early March.  In his blog, he posted a note that one of his family members had written.  With credit to him, I feel it is worth repeating here:

Pregnancy is the happiest reason ever for feeling like crap.

Final thought of the evening:

Erin was sick like that, for pretty much her whole pregnancy, so everyone told her it would definitely be a girl. But what does “everyone” know, baby Christian is all boy, all the time.

I’m so happy for you guys, I could just pop.

    love,
    Robin

Katie has heard that too… that being extra sick means it will be a girl. While staying with us after the hurricane, my mom overheard this theory. She pointed out that she had 3 boys and was sick as a dog each and every time.

I’ve heard “never get too hungry or too full.” You could try keeping crackers by the bed to snack on in the middle of the night so you don’t wake up with an empty belly? What killed me every morning was brushing my teeth… gag reflex? No fun feeling sick! I hope it clears up in a few weeks.

I thought it was quite interesting that in your blog, you referred to “BOB” as a “He.”You guys are really set on having a boy! LOL! Everything will turn out fine. Kate, I hope you start feeling better and can start eating regular meals. For someone who likes to eat, that must be rough. And.I wouldn’ worry so much about what everyone else says about their pregnancy and if it is a girl or a boy. Everybody and every circumstance/situation is different! Hang in there. Once you get to the end of this, the outcome will be so worth it! Miss ya!

    Love,
    Heather

Hang in there Katie! Ben, just continue to be patient with her. AND indulge her cravings when she has them…it’s supposedly her body telling her she needs something that is in whatever it is she is craving. You will definitely cherish the entire pregnancy…even the sickness. It is all worth it in the end. I am thankful that I didn’t have that but my sister was sick for 38 weeks almost..she made the most of the good days though. Try some of those ‘wives tales’ you hear for suggestions to prevent the nausea and sickness…some really do work..it’s just a matter of finding what works for you.

Katie-Thankfully mine ended about 11 weeks and didn’t start until 7 weeks. There are 4 of my friends all pregnant and due within 1-2 months of each other. I recommend trying seaband wrist bands that you can get a Wal-Mart near the motion sickness medicine. They seem to work some. Also Phenegran you can take while pregnant, but it knocks you out. Just keep hanging in there. I am 20 weeks and feeling a lot better, and I can only hope yours will go away as well. We find out tomorrow or in November what the gender is and we will tell you guys.
