Almost every year since we met in college, my friend Anna and I have made a yearly trek to New Braunfels, TX for Wurstfest (the annual salute to sausage, beer, polka dancing, schnitzel, struedel, fried pickles, fried Oreos, fried arteries… you get the idea). Wurstfest is much like any regular county fair, except that it has a very German theme… and most of the crowd is in some stage of inebriation. As the years passed, our annual pilgrimage to the land of the chicken dance became a tradition with other friends and family members.
We went back to Wurstfest a couple of weeks ago. This year, the party goers also included Katie (you might have heard of her… HOT chick with an amazing growing belly), Simon (dear old friend from my childhood… now married to Anna), Robin (dear old friend since I was 15… not married to Anna), Helen (Anna’s dear younger sister… has a brother-in-law married to Anna), plus several more of Anna’s relatives.
Clockwise from Left: Katie, Ben, Simon, Helen, Anna, Robin
So normally Wurstfest is a time when Anna, Simon and I throw our better judgement aside and throw our money down the toilet as we imbibe a few pitchers of deliciously overpriced imported German beer in authentic imported (aka made-in-China) plastic souvenir cups. However, this year was different (again).
Prior to going to Wurstfest, Simon showed me his custom level on the new Playstation3 video game called Little Big Planet. He was so proud and insisted I play it through to the end. I was glad that I did because I got a BIG surprise when I made it to the goal. Here’s a screenshot: (click it to enlarge)
That’s right, another pregnant couple. We now know 5 other pregnant couples. I know, big surprise… we’re all at that silly breeding age. Still, I was excited… right up to the point when I realized that my favorite beer drinking buddy (Anna) was once again off the sauce. So I drank a good bit of her portion too. As always, Wurstfest was a blast. No, I didn’t get THAT drunk… really, ask Kate.
Big time thanks to Anna’s mom for putting us up in a beautiful new condo in New Braunfels. It was great to have a whole weekend in New Braunfels and Gruene, instead of just an evening.
Here was a new experience this year: Besides the regular throng of drunk people stumbling, we saw a skunk crawl out of the bushes and scare a group of women. Drunk people fleeing from a skunk. Priceless – so worth the trip.
