Last Thursday, I went to get Lucy up in the morning, and this is how I found her sleeping.
I couldn’t resist getting the picture. She looked so peaceful. I loved the hands behind the head in her “I’m just chillin’ here” pose.
(Caution… nerdy camera talk ahead… read on at your own risk)
The white fluffy sheets made a great washout background. The curtains were drawn and the lights were off, so I used the light bouncing in from the hall. I set up the tripod next to her crib, shortened two legs so I could lean the camera closer in and down, changed out my lens to a 50mm/1.4 prime, set the white balance manually to match her sheets, adjusted the door like a bounce card to get the right lighting coming in from the hall, and shot a long exposure (1 sec @ f2.0 / ISO 800 )… all without waking her. The 800 ISO produces a litle bit of noise, which I am not crazy about. I did some at lower ISO and longer exposure, but her small movements were more visible, and motion blur is more distracting than low-light noise. I tried some under-exposed, over-exposed and some right on the mark. I liked the slightly blown-out look of this one, which was pushed by 1/3 or 2/3 in camera. No post edits were done, other than a rotate and resize. And if you are still reading this… you are as big of a photo nerd as I am.

Too cute! Milo also rests that way- sometimes in the stroll which brings all of the passerbys to you with comments of how they would like to be pushed in a stroller and just sit back and enjoy life! Always funny to see! Must be a Coate pose as I have also seen Lola sleep this way!
beautiful picture. The nerdy camera talk was a bit much, I read it all as one who couldn’t turn their head from a nasty car crash.
She gets more beautiful everyday.
Great photo — with a gorgeous subject, of course!
You know I think she is adorable. I just hope that children #2 & #3 get as much photo attention as #1 is getting.
3, huh? Hmm.
yeah….who said anything about 3???? Did I miss the memo????
She is beautiful! What a gorgeous baby girl you have!
Very nice. I really like how to that you did for the picture as well. Yes, be very careful to save some picture takin for the 5th child…
